General Finishes Stain Blocker is designed for effectiveness, not price point. To maximize its effectiveness, the product is formulated with the highest quality ingredients, requiring a sophisticated resin system and an atypical formulation, which results in a more expensive product. This primer is intended for use on those pieces where you will really care if there is bleed-through, as it will work every time, not just some of the time.
For surface preparation, existing finishes (stain, lacquer, paint) should be cleaned and any grime, grease, or loose paint removed. Extremely dirty surfaces should be washed down with a 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and water, or a sulfate-free commercial cleaner. Any heavy buildup should be removed with a synthetic wool pad, and the surface should be allowed to dry completely. Prep sanding should be done with 220 grit sandpaper, and the dust removed.
For raw wood, the surface should be sanded with the grain using 120 and then 220 grit paper, with the dust removed.
When applying the product, it is essential to apply two coats. The first coat will absorb contaminants in the wood, causing a color change during the initial application, and the second coat will seal them.
For brush or roller application, a uniform coat should be applied using a high-quality synthetic blend brush or a short nap roller. For spray application, the product is ready to use from the container and does not require thinning. It should be strained through a fine mesh filter and sprayed at a medium to wet film thickness of 3-5 mils. Heavier coats will take longer to dry and cure. Spray equipment options include compressed air, HVLP, or Air Assisted Airless, with specific fluid tip sizes recommended.
Due to a metal can shortage, the product may come in a plastic jug instead of a metal container. This Stain Blocker can be used to protect pigmented finishes from stain, dye, and wood tannin bleed-through, and can serve as a base coat for General Finishes Milk Paints, Chalk Style Paints, and Pigmented Polys.
It is important to note that the product should not be mixed with any paint, stain, or topcoat, as contamination from other finishes will cause product failure. All brushes and equipment should be rinsed with clean water, and General Finishes Brush & Gun Cleaner should not be used.
